Thunderbird has an add-on architecture (also known as plug-ins or extensions) which allows third-party developers to extend and enhance Thunderbird functionality. There are dozens of add-ons available, and they are generally easy to install and maintain. Here are a few that we've worked with that you might find interesting; please contact us if you need assistance or have questions about them.
Display Quota, which displays the current status of your IMAP quota (on for instance CalMail) in Thunderbird's status bar and will warn you when you reach a configurable limit. (We install this add-on by default for our customers).
ConfigDate, which allows you to configure the format of the Date column.
Lightning, which provides an integrated calendar for Thunderbird.
Signature Switch, which allows you to switch the signature on or off, or choose a new one from a predefined set.
No New Window, which makes sure that clicking on a message or a link in a message will always open the message in an existing window.
Quote Colors, which configures text and background colors for different quote levels when displaying messages.
Remove Duplicate Messages, which you can use to find and remove duplicate messages from the selected folder and its subfolders.
Mail Redirect, which allows you to redirect mail messages to other recipients.
The Penelope project's intention is to join the Eudora user experience with the Mozilla platform. (This add-on is fairly immature as of this writing).
