Eudora tips & tricks

Eudora is a richly featured e-mail client and offers many little "secrets".

command icon The Command (shown to the left), Option and Shift keys on a Macintosh keyboard (Ctrl, Alt and Shift respectively in Windows) are unique in that another key must be pressed while holding down one or several of them.

Select all similar messages

To select all messages in a mailbox whose contents of a column in the message summary are the same, hold down Option (Macintosh) or Alt (Windows) and click a column in the a message summary. For instance, click the Sender column of a specific message summary to select all messages sent by that person.

Command-clicking an email address

In Eudora on the Macintosh, you can create a new message with an email address in the To line by Command-clicking any email address in a message or directory services window. You can do the same thing in the Windows version of Eudora by selecting the message and clicking on the To button.

Paste without styles

In Eudora, hold down Shift when pasting (Command-Shift-V / Ctrl-Shift-V) to remove text styles from the text you're pasting.

Triple-clicking a message window

In Eudora on the Macintosh, to return to the (open or closed) mailbox window of an open message, triple-click on the title bar of the message window. This is also likely to collapse the message window, if a double-click is configured so, in the Appearance control panel (formerly WindowShade). Double-clicking on the title bar in the Windows version will cause the message to expand to take up the whole screen.

Close all open windows

To close all open windows, hold down Option (Macintosh) or Shift (Windows) and choose Close (Command-Option-W / Ctrl-Shift-W) from the File menu. Option-clicking a window's close box has the same effect in the Macintosh version of Eudora.

Copying messages

To make a copy of a message into another mailbox, hold down Option (Macintosh) or Shift (Windows) when you transfer the message.

Printing or replying with a selection

You can highlight a given portion of a message you want to print and then hold down the Shift key, which changes Print on the file menu to Print Selection. This approach also works when you want to include only a part of an original message in a reply.

Moving front window to background

Command-\ in Eudora on the Macintosh moves the front window to the background rather than closes it.

Mail transfer options

While Command-M checks the incoming mail in Eudora on the Macintosh, Option-Command-M brings up a window offering several options for checking and sending mail, such as fetching just the message headers of your incoming mail.
