L & S Guidelines for Postdoctoral Appointments
February 2011 – The UAW and UC postdocstoral scholars voted to ratify their first union contract effective August 12, 2010. A complete copy of the UAW 5810 Postdoctoral Scholar Unit contract can be found at http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/hrlabor.htm.
In order to request an appointment/reappointment for a postdoctoral scholar, please fill out the L&S Request for Postdoc Appointment form and submit all requisite documents. After completing the form, please email your request packet to lspd_appt@berkeley.edu or print and submit it along with the other documents to:

Once the request is approved, you will receive an email with the offer of appointment letter as an attachment. The postdoc must confirm agreement to the conditions of appointment by signing the appointment letter and return it to the department prior to the appointment start date. Upon arrival, the postdoc must sign the offer of appointment letter to confirm acceptance of the terms of the appointment.
CHANGE IN PRACTICE: Instead of submitting a VSPA affiliation (paper) form, the department shall enter information electronically via the VSPA-Gateway. The VSPA application and appointment requests should be made at the same time. Please contact Sam Castaneda, the VSPA director at 510/643-9681 with questions about the VSPA-Gateway system. Once the VSPA affiliation request is approved, the department will receive email notification via the VSPA Gateway system/VSPA office.
NEW PRACTICE: The department is responsible for distributing the Union dues/fees election form to all initially appointed postdocs and shall be responsible for forwarding the original signed election forms to Labor Relations. You may find the form on at the bottom of the HR website.
