These stills are from two films of award-winning filmmaker Professor Trinh T. Minh-ha. A Tale of Love plays with the fiction of love in love stories, as inspired by the national Vietnamese love poem "Kim Van Kieu." The film invites the spectator to experience cinema differently through non-naturalistic acting and layered interaction of performed reality, memory, and imagination. Surname Viet Given Name Nam (inset) unfolds around questions of identity, popular memory, and cultural politics. It focuses on aspects of Vietnamese reality as seen through the lives and history of women's resistance in Vietnam and the U.S. |
