College of Letters & Science Leadership Fund

Whether in the arts, humanities, biological sciences, social sciences, physical sciences, or interdisciplinary studies, students in the College of Letters & Science learn from some of the finest scholars in the world—from Nobel Laureates and MacArthur Fellows to Fulbright Scholars and Pulitzer Prize winners.

Although UC Berkeley is a public institution, state support currently provides only 35 percent of the campus budget—a 10 percent decline over the last decade. Nonetheless, the College remains committed to maintaining the excellence of its faculty and academic programs.

The College of Letters & Science Leadership Fund is an essential source of discretionary support funded by unrestricted gifts. Like any discovery-focused venture, the University must be able to take risks initiating new programs, recruiting top talent, and conducting exploratory research. Discretionary resources, such as the Leadership Fund, give the Deans the flexibility to respond to the College's greatest needs and to act when opportunities arise. Together with the Chancellor, the Deans work to position Cal at the forefront of the advancing frontier of knowledge and discovery.
