Thanks to the generous support of alumni and friends, the College surpassed
its goal for the New Century Campaign for the Liberal Arts and secured
commitments of $181 million to support its highest priorities. To follow
are some highlights:
-
Raised $11 million to build the Jean Gray Hargrove Music
Library
This new facility will house the Department's famous collectionone
of the largest and most heavily used resources for music scholarship
in the United States. The new library will accommodate new technologies
for the study of music, and the precious rare books and manuscripts
will be safely preserved and stored.
-
16 Distinguished Professorships and 22 Endowed Chairs established
These invaluable resources enable us to recruit and retain our top-notch
faculty. Distinguished Professorships (established with a $1 million
gift) and Endowed Chairs (established with a $500,000 gift) provide
non-salary support for faculty members, including funds for professional
and research expenses, graduate student support, academic infrastructure
and programs, equipment purchases, curriculum development, and travel.
-
$11.7 million raised for graduate fellowships
The stellar quality of Berkeley's graduate education
is vital to Berkeley's standing as the world's most
distinguished research university and as the nation's
top public undergraduate institution. The best professors
choose to conduct research at Berkeley because of
the outstanding caliber of its graduate students.
Among the College's most pressing needs, graduate
fellowships enable departments to attract some of
the most sought-after scholars, creating opportunities
for our faculty to work with and teach these students.

Division's Publications, Communications, and Events

-
$4 million raised for the Letters & Science Leadership
Fund
The L&S
Leadership Fund is an essential source of unrestricted
support used at the discretion of the Deans. Among
Leadership Fund initiatives are the Letters
& Science College Courses. Designed to foster
the ideals of a liberal arts education at the highest
level of excellence, College Courses are taught
by some of the most outstanding faculty on campus,
for students who are eager to take an intellectual
risk.
