Who we are: We study and teach the languages, literature, and cultures of Russian, other Slavic peoples, and their neighbors in Europe and Western Asia. The Slavs and their neighbors have been at the forefront of cultural developments in the past and they are now at the center of ongoing, profound cultural and political change.

Courses on literature and culture: Most courses on literature and culture are taught in English, with readings in English translation. Many of our courses satisfy university breadth requirements (often more than one), as noted next to individual courses. We offer two courses that satisfy the requirement on American cultures, and we offer sections of Reading and Composition.

Languages: We teach Russian at all levels (through eight semesters) and a number of other languages of Slavic peoples and their neighbors. On a regular basis, we offer four semesters of instruction in other languages of Central Europe: Polish, Serbian/Croatian, Czech, Bulgarian, Hungarian, along with courses in English translation on the literature of these peoples. On an occasional basis, we teach other non-Slavic languages of importance to East Europe and West Asia.
