Visiting
Scholar Policy
11/1/04
The
Scandinavian Department at UC Berkeley is pleased
to offer sponsorship of a limited number of
qualified visiting scholars who are interested
in a temporary affiliation with the department
while conducting research and writing projects
funded from other sources. Ordinarily the department
can host no more than one or two visiting scholars
at any given time.
Affiliation with the department as a visiting
scholar entitles faculty and post-doctoral visitors
to the use of a university email account and
to library privileges during the time of residence
(for a $200 per year fee). When available, visiting
faculty scholars may also be given desk space
on campus, although this, as well as computer
access, is not guaranteed, and will not in any
case be available for graduate-student visiting
scholars. Fax and photocopy services are also
available for a small extra charge. All visitors
are also responsible for fees related to processing
visa(s) (currently $410).
Visiting faculty and post-doctoral scholars
will be assigned an individual faculty sponsor
in the department who will help the visitor
get oriented to the University upon arrival
and integrated into the intellectual life of
the department. To facilitate this process,
we ask that all visiting scholars present a
lecture on a research topic of their choice
shortly after arrival in Berkeley, by way of
introduction for themselves and their work to
the faculty and students in the department.
Requests for visiting scholar status should
be accompanied by a CV and submitted by February
1 for visits during the following academic year
beginning in late August. Applications are evaluated
as a group, and those selected will be notified
immediately upon selection.
Any inquiries about the program should be directed
