Description: From French advertisements featuring Little Red Riding Hood to hip-hop songs in which MC Solaar proclaims himself a "pro du verbe" all the while playing with proverbs, diverse communicative acts draw on tradition to create new meaning. And, far from killing tradition, modern life and technology revitalize it at will. This class seeks to study this phenomenon in French and francophone culture and to situate literature in the framework of other artistic and cultural practices that rework or refuse various forms of tradition. Coursework includes daily homework, oral presentations, compositions, and grammar exams. Each student will contribute regularly to the class blog and will conduct online research on internet folklore in French (e.g., urban legends, jokes, hoaxes). 10 hours of class per week with 20 hours of outside work.
