The Undergraduate Chair provides general academic advising, is available to talk to students about planning for graduate school, and evaluates selected transfer work. The Undergraduate Student Affairs Officer (SAO)
The Undergraduate Student Affairs Officer (SAO) is responsible for day-to-day advising of both declared majors and students interested in Anthropology. The SAO can assist students with: declaring the major; assessing progress in the major; administrative concerns (i.e. TeleBEARS, Add/Drops); graduation matters; general info on Anthropology courses offered each term; options for independent study; Senior Honors Program; researching graduate programs and enrichment opportunities; and referral to apppropriate campus offices as needed.

Mary Howell (email) is the Undergraduate SAO. Her office is in 209 Kroeber Hall.  She is available on a drop-in basis (no appointment needed) Monday-Friday from 8:15-12,and 1-3:45. Mary can be reached by e-mail at mslakey@berkeley.edu, or by phone at (510) 642-3616.

Faculty Advising
Undergraduates are encouraged to seek specialized advising from professors who are in the field in which the students are especially interested, regarding supplemental coursework recommendations and advice on graduate programs which have strong programs in that specialization. Faculty office hours change every semester. The main office (232 Kroeber) will have a list of office hours at the beginning of each semester and the hours will be posted on the anthropology web site, see Office Hours.

Research Advising

The Office of Undergraduate Research operates to involve Berkeley undergraduates more deeply in the research life of the University. The office assists students with finding opportunities to work with faculty on the cutting edge research projects for which Berkeley is world-renowned, and/or with planning for an individual original sustained research, field-study or creative project. Visit http://research.berkeley.edu
Individual advising is available on an on-going basis by contacting the Program Coordinator.

The Anthropology Undergraduate Association (A.U.A.) is a student group at UC Berkeley dedicated to the enrichment of the academic and social lives of anthropology students. Membership is $5 per semester, and is open to all students at UC Berkeley, faculty and staff. It is not necessary to be a member to take part in most activities. Monthly meetings are held in 221 Kroeber Hall (the Gifford Room). Notice of general meetings is sent out on ant_under, the anthropology undergraduate list-serve. A.U.A. also maintains a bulletin board outside the Anthropology Library (230 Kroeber Hall).

Anthropology web site
The web site is a resource for the most up to the minute happenings in the Anthropology Department. It is especially useful for undergraduates to get course descriptions when registering for classes.
