Understanding Lifeways and
Biocultural Diversity in Prehistoric Japan
Bioarchaeology
An important component of the project is the integration of bioarchaeological data on health and lifestyle from Jomon skeletal material. This project will specifically examine aspects of lifelong bone health as reflected in microstructural indicators of bone maintenance (bone quantity and quality) together with gross indicators of pathology and metabolic stress. This research will examine primarily Early and Middle Jomon human skeletal samples excavated from various regions of the Japanese archipelago. Analyses will be conducted in collaboration with Japanese and American scholars at Kyoto University and the Skeletal Biology Laboratory at UC Berkeley. |
