Osorezan Temple Front gate
Located in Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, Osorezan is a 879 meter-high volcano in the center of the Shimokita Peninsula Semi-national Park.  Associated with Entsuji Temple of the Soto Sect of Buddhism, this place is well known as one of the three holy grounds (reijo) in Japan.  The temple dedicated to the souls of the deceased, including those of unborn babies.  Our first weekend happens to be during the Osorezan grand festival, when the temple is visited by a large number of believers of Jizo Bosatsu (Ksitigarbha) as well as tourists.  Osorezan is also famous for its itako, or spiritual mediums.  The barren landscape of the volcanic mountain and the beautiful beach of nearby Lake Usoriyama are associated with hell and heaven respectively.  This will give you an opportunity to enjoy the scenery and observe traditional Buddhist practices.  Please pay respects to visitors who are there for religious purposes.
Costs: approximately $70 (train and bus fare; temple admission fee)
