Funded by the Avenali Endowment, the Townsend Departmental Residencies are intended to bring to campus individuals with whom faculty and students might not otherwise have direct or sustained contact, including distinguished scholars from other institutions, writers, journalists, or others who can enrich academic programs but who may not necessarily be academics.
The Center especially wishes to host individuals who might not be likely or are not already scheduled to visit Berkeley. The program offers the host departments a special opportunity to integrate visitors of outstanding interest into their own programs, and at the same time to make a substantial contribution to the overall intellectual life of the campus.
Each visitor engages in public programs and visits with undergraduate and graduate students. Each resident fellow will receive an honorarium in the amount of $10,000 plus airfare (up to $500 domestic, $1,000 international) and up to $2,000 for housing expenses. The Townsend Center will also make available up to $500 to cover visa and related fees for international visitors. Residents may be receiving funds from other institutions to the extent that such institutions allow, but they should not be engaged in other paid activities at Berkeley during the Departmental Residency.
Please note that host departments are responsible for all arrangements related to the event, including visas for international scholars.
