Undergraduate Research in the College of Letters and Science

There are many opportunities for L & S undergraduates to do research at Berkeley—in departments, research centers and institutes. Here, an undergraduate works in the Cancer Research Lab, an organized research unit directed by Professor James Allison of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology.

A number of programs provide excellent opportunities for student-initiated research, including the Beckman Scholars Program, the Haas Scholars Program, and the Biology Fellows Program, to name a few.

The largest campus-wide program—and a great place to start—is the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program. URAP creates opportunities for students to work on research projects initiated by Berkeley's world renowned faculty. Working closely with faculty, students deepen their knowledge and skills in areas of special interest, while experiencing what it means to be part of an intellectual community engaged in research.
