L & S students specialize in a wide variety of disciplines, and if no program matches their interests, they are able to design their own program of study through the Interdisciplinary Studies Field Major administered by Undergraduate and Interdisciplinary Studies. As the "center for innovations in undergraduate education that extend beyond traditional departmental boundaries," U G I S offers many of the most exciting undergraduate educational programs on campus.

While it may seem that earning an I S F degree would be easy, it is not. Students work in close consultation with their faculty advisor to create their own programs of study around an interdisciplinary area of concentration. These have included such wide-ranging topics as "The Meaning of Globalization," "Law, Crime, and Punishment: A Comparative Approach," "Music and Perception/Psychoacoustics," and "Ideas and Literature: Existentialism," to name a few.
