Above, a student works in the Howison Philosophy Library, located in Moses Hall. Students interested in advanced study in philosophy have a number of programs through which to focus their studies. The Ph.D. program in philosophy allows graduate students opportunity to work on a particular philosophical issue in depth. It also is designed to produce scholars with a broad knowledge of philosophy as a field. The Graduate Degree Program in Ancient Philosophy is offered jointly by the Department of Classics and the Department of Philosophy. It is designed to provide broad knowledge in both fields. Graduate students in classics have the opportunity to take philosophy courses integral to their research interests; philosophy students develop their knowledge of ancient Latin and Greek languages and Graeco-Roman culture. Students may also earn a Ph.D. in Logic and Methodology of Science. The Group in Logic and the Methodology of Science is an interdepartmental unit with a graduate degree program. It is designed for students interested in mathematical logic and formal aspects of philosophy, such as philosophy of mathematics, language, science and philosophical logic. Graduate research is often interdisciplinary, drawing from mathematics and philosophy as well as electrical engineering and computer science. Genevieve Shiffrar photo |
