A student in the East Asian Library East Asian Languages and Cultures Department

Students of the prestigious Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures benefit from a multitude of resources, including the Institute of East Asian Studies which unites the Centers for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Studies. The world-class East Asian Library, pictured above, crowns the study of East Asia both at Berkeley and the entire U C system. The library houses one of the nation's two most comprehensive collections in East Asian studies outside of the Library of Congress. Its 8,850 volume Murakami Library, for example, rivals any Japanese collection in the writings of the Meiji Period (1868-1912) and its Mitsui Library ranks as the second best in the West for its collection of Chinese rubbings.
