The renowned Mathematics Department in the College of Letters and Science at Berkeley has ranked consistently as the best in the nation since 1970. Its distinguished faculty represent all major fields, its library is one of the finest, and its educational programs support a broad and rich array of learning experiences. The Department includes both pure and applied mathematics and has 65 regular faculty, 30 postdoctoral faculty and fellows, 400 majors and growing, and over 200 graduate students.

The Department maintains a close relationship with the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute on Centennial Drive in the hills above campus. The Center for Pure and Applied Mathematics, which is in Evans Hall, is an organized research unit allied with Department that fosters interdisciplinary research involving mathematics.
