The Department of Art Practice prides itself on the creative, intelligent exploration of visual ideas. Graduate and undergraduate art students strive "to develop a level of commitment to artmaking as a way of thinking and seeing that transforms common sight into uncommon insight." They follow in the footsteps of an impressive array of nationally and internationally known artists who studied at Berkeley, including Pat Adams, Rich Arnitz, John Beech, Shirley Carter, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Enrique Chagoya, Pauletta Chaorco, Robert Colescott, Jay de Feo, Rene de Guzman, Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, Nancy Genn, Mary Heilmann, Kathleen Jessie, Marilyn Levine, Deborah Oropallo, Emmy Lou Packard, Joel Perlmann. Janis Provisor, Merl Ross, Rudy Serra, Rick Soss, Mark Thompson, Tree Williams, Helen Wills and Andrew Young. The faculty, past and present, are equally impressive as professional artists and teachers. Their work is collected and exhibited internationally and they have won nearly all prestigious art awards and grants for their work in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and new genres.
