Excavating Our AncestorU C Berkeley team excavating and recording at the Gadi Bota site, Aramis, Ethiopia. Yellow flags mark the places where fossilized bones of a single adult's skeleton were recovered. This partial skeleton represents Ardipithecus ramidus, the oldest known human ancestor, radioisotopically dated to 4.4 million years. The Berkeley team is lead by Professor Tim White of the Department of Integrative Biology, who focuses on early hominid skeletal biology, environmental context, and behavior.
