Gamelan Instruments and Courses Attract an Audience

Gamelan — a type of percussive music from Java or Bali — is one of the Music Department’s most popular courses, consistently attracting more than 100 students for about 60 spots. A performance will be held May 4.

Mark Schlissel Named Provost of Brown University

Mark Schlissel, dean of L&S's Biological Sciences Division, will become provost of Brown University starting July 1. Schlissel  joined the UC Berkeley faculty in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology in 1999. He was appointed dean of Biological Sciences in July 2008.
