Three L&S Faculty Members Named HHMI Investigators

Five UC Berkeley faculty members — three of them in the College of Letters and Science — have been appointed  Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigators. The L&S faculty members are Yang Dan, Abby F. Dernburg and Michael B. Eisen.

Viral "Arms Race" Between Virus and Host Documented by Researcher

UC Berkeley researchers have for the first time documented the "arms race" within the genes of both viruses and their hosts. The research is described in the May 23 issue of Science.

Professor Tyler Stovall will be the new dean of the Undergraduate Division of the College of Letters and Science  beginning July 1. Stovall is a respected history professor who has made modern France, race, labor, and class issues his specialties.

New L&S Initiative to Promote Entrepreneurial Activity

The College of Letters and Science in collaboration with the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship is launching the Entrepreneurial Initiative as a means to offer students key tools needed to turn ideas into practical enterprise. A new course will be offered in the fall as part of this initiative.

 

Graduating Senior an Infectious Disease Detective, University Medal Winner

Leslie Chung-Lei Sheu's dogged scientific curiosity, academic success and empathy for the downtrodden have earned her the University Medal, the campus's top honor for a graduating senior.
