UC Berkeley astronomer Marc Davis will share with three other astronomers the 2011 Cosmology Prize of The Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation. The astronomers were honored for computer simulations that convinced the world of the existence of “dark matter.”

Antihydrogen Trapped for More Than 16 Minutes
The ALPHA experiment team at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, which includes UC Berkeley professors, announced that they have trapped antiatoms for up to 16 minutes and 40 seconds. This success will pave the way for increasingly sophisticated experiments on antimatter.

Aaron Benavidez, the son of working class Latinos in Stockton, Calif., will accept the University Medal on May 14 for his scholarship, public service and humanity. G. Steven Martin Named Interim Dean of Biological Sciences
G. Steven Martin, a distinguished professor of cell and developmental biology, has been appointed interim dean of biological sciences in the College of Letters and Science effective July 1. He takes over for Mark Schlissel, who was recently named provost of Brown University.
