The giggle call of the "laughing," hyena tells other hyenas its social status, according to a new UC Berkeley study. These calls also convey information about age — the pitch goes down as the hyena gets older — and identity of each individual animal.

A new exhibit of Dutch clandestine art and literature showcases pamphlets, books and artwork from a Bancroft Library special collection, one of the largest of its kind in the world. An analysis of more than 70,000 galaxies by physicists from UC Berkeley and other universities demonstrates that the universe – at least up to a distance of 3.5 billion light years from Earth – plays by the rules set out 95 years ago by Albert Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity.

Alvarez Was Right About Demise of Dinosaurs

It's been 30 years since UC Berkeley's Walter Alvarez theorized that a monstrous asteroid slammed into Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula 65 million years ago, dooming half the life on Earth. Others, however, offered competing theories. Now, an international team of scientists says Alvarez was right.
