Janet Broughton, a professor of philosophy and dean of L&S's Arts and Humanities Division, has been appointed vice provost for academic affairs and faculty welfare. In her new position, she will have broad responsibilities for the academic administration of all colleges, schools, and divisions.

$1 Million Grant to Steer Undergraduates Into Research
The Amgen Foundation has renewed a four-year, $1 million grant to UC Berkeley, that to date has introduced 94 undergraduate students to laboratory research and steered more than three-quarters of them into graduate level research.
New Device Vastly Improves Ultrasound Imaging
Scientists at UC Berkeley and in Spain have found a way to overcome one of the limitations of ultrasound imaging. In a paper published in Nature Physics this week, physicists demonstrate how to reconstruct detail as small as one-fiftieth of the wavelength of the sound waves.
